Brain Derived
Neurotrophic Factor

Scientifically Proven Ingredients

Surge 2.0 includes ingredients that have scientifically been shown to trigger (or turn on) your BDNF, known as Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor.

Especially when combined with other stimulants or nootropic ingredients, studies show that the outcome is powerful. We call this the "neurotrophic effect".

Lion's Mane Mushroom
is Neurotrophic

Lion's mane mushrooms, also known as Hericium erinaceus, have been shown to have neurotrophic properties. These properties are due to bioactive compounds in the mushroom, such as hericenones, erinacines, alkaloids, steroids, and polysaccharides. These compounds can induce the expression of neurotrophic factors, like nerve growth factors (NGF), which may help protect against disorders like Alzheimer's disease.

Here are some ways lion's mane mushrooms may have neurotrophic properties:

  • Brain cell growth

Pre-clinical testing has shown that lion's mane mushrooms can significantly impact brain cell growth and improve memory. Laboratory tests have also shown that compounds from the mushroom can promote neuron projections, which extend and connect to other neurons.

  • Nerve growth factor

Lion's mane mushrooms may increase NGF expressions in the spiral ganglion neurons (SGNs) and the temporal lobes. In mice, oral administration of lion's mane mycelia has been shown to significantly increase NGF concentrations in the hippocampus.

  • Blood-brain barrier

Some fans of lion's mane believe that the compounds in the mushroom can pass through the blood-brain barrier and directly impact brain cell function. In vitro and in vivo studies have shown that hericenones and erinacines can cross the BBB to have neuroprotective effects.

It's more than just BDNF!

L-Carnitine is Neurotrophic

L-carnitine, an amino acid, has neurotrophic effects, and its acetyl ester, acetyl-L-carnitine (ALC), has been shown to have neuroprotective and analgesic effects in painful neuropathies. L-carnitine can pass through the blood-brain barrier and regulate neurotransmitter levels in the brain. ALC can also increase nerve growth factor (NGF) levels and NGF receptor (p75NGFR) expression in the central nervous system (CNS) of old rats.

Here are some ways L-carnitine and ALC may have neurotrophic effects:

  • Brain function

L-carnitine L-Tartrate may help improve brain function and prevent dementia by playing a role in acetylcholine production.

  • Neuroinflammation

ALC may have positive effects on neuroinflammation, which is a common factor in many neurodegenerative diseases.

  • Brain injury

L-carnitine and exendin-4 may have antioxidative and neuroprotective effects in conditions of impaired neurological function. They may also help mitigate tissue damage and functional decline after moderate traumatic brain injury (TBI).

  • Peripheral neuropathies

Double-blinded studies have shown that ALC can reduce pain and improve nerve function and trophism in peripheral neuropathies.
